SCHOOL CLOSINGS AND DELAYS

The following guidelines have been developed and implemented when deciding to close or keep school open during inclement weather:

  • The Superintendent and Chief Operations Officer will survey the district and may consult with the Madison County Sheriff's Department, the Indiana State Police Department, as well as other agencies when determining to delay, close or keep school open.
  • Bus Drivers have been directed to utilize their best judgment and not travel down roads that they determine to be too treacherous and unsafe. Students located on roads where bus drivers have determined that they cannot reach will be excused from attendance and parents may elect to bring them to school anytime during the day or keep them home the entire day.
  • Parents may determine that they do not want their child standing or walking to a bus stop because of perceived danger at their location. It will be at the parent's discretion whether to bring their child to school or keep the child home for the day. If the parent decides to keep their child home they must call the child's school and inform the office of their decision to keep their child home in order for the child to have an excused absence. In the event the child is brought to school late the child will not be considered tardy.
  • We also ask that the parents call the central office if they determine that the bus cannot safely reach their child, or they decide that they do not want their child riding to school. This will allow the driver to be contacted by the school and the bus will not stop or drive to the location of the student not attending.

It is the administration's objective that this policy will meet the needs of our students and parents and allow us to transport our students safely and effectively in our efforts to conduct school consistently. It is obviously our goal to also respect and encourage parent decision-making and input in this difficult process.

SEVERE WEATHER

When winter weather approaches, FLCS is prepared for the inevitable-school delays and cancellations. The school administration will make every effort to inform employees and the public school related weather delays or cancellations by 6:30 a.m. on the day it is deemed necessary. No news means school is scheduled to open at the regular time. During winter weather please use extreme caution as you drive or wait for your school bus.
