Frankton-Lapel Community Schools


  • Frankton Elementary School student Samantha Burris led the Pledge of Allegiance.
  • The Board acknowledged Lapel Jr.-Sr. High School which provided the information on the board room bulletin board for February.
  • The Board approved the minutes from the January 13, 2005 school board meeting as presented.
  • A public hearing was held to discuss the option of using a 12-month school term rather than expanding classroom space, including building a new Lapel High School and remodeling Lapel Elementary School and Frankton Jr.-Sr. High School.  Tammy Todd spoke to Board concerning this option.
  • The Board recognized Samantha Burris, a 4th grader at Frankton Elementary School, for winning a state wide contest sponsored by Bright House Network for Indiana art students to design artwork for holiday cards.  Samantha won a plaque, along with published copies of her card and a $500 educational grant.
  • Principals Jerry Kemerly of Lapel Jr.-Sr. High School, Mike Gustin of Frankton Jr.-Sr. High School, Ronda Podzielinski of Frankton Elementary School, and Woody Fields of Lapel Elementary School reported on the improvement plans for each school for 2004-05.
  • Principal Mike Gustin reported on the special education cooperative's plan to initiate an alternative school concept for dropouts and at-risk high school students.
  • Superintendent Ned Speicher reported on the schedule for the construction projects at Frankton Jr. High, Lapel Elementary, and Lapel High School.
  • Mr. Speicher reported on the financial status of the school corporation.
  • Mr. Speicher reported on the textbook reimbursement received from the State of Indiana.
  • Mr. Speicher reported on the health insurance claims for January 2005.
  • Mr. Speicher and Assistant Superintendent Bobby Fields reported on the initial ISTEP+ results for 2004-05.
  • The Board approved a credit card policy for school corporation employees.
  • The Board approved changes to the 2005-06 school calendar.
  • The Board approved invoices for construction services for January 2005 from the architect.
  • The Board approved the following gifts:
    • Corporation:
      • $3,000 from Barry & Suzanne Jennings for the Gifted & Talented program
    • Lapel Elementary School
      • $150 from Madison County Just Say No for Bulldogs Against Drunk Driving
      • $100 from Bobbette Snyder for all day kindergarten
  • The Board approved the date for the kindergarten round-up to be on Thursday, April 14, 2005 from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. at both elementary schools.
  • The Board approved the summer band schedule for Lapel Jr.-Sr. High School.
  • The Board approved the monthly claim documents as submitted.
  • Tammy Davis, Lafayette Township, acknowledged the Reading Recovery program at Frankton Elementary School and commented on the teacher input in the construction design of the upcoming remodeling and building projects.
  • The following documents were signed by all Board members:

    • Letters of appreciation to Barry & Suzanne Jennings, Madison County Just Say No, and Bobbette Snyder.
  • Announcements were made of the following dates:
    • February, 24, 2005: Special Board Meeting at Administration Office, 7:30 p.m.
    • March 10, 2005: Regular Board Meeting at Administration Office, 7:30 p.m
